GPS was created and realized by the U.S. Department of Defense (USDOD) and was originally run with 24 satellites. It was established in 1973 to overcome the limitations of previous navigation systems. Think of GPS like Radio - there is no charge to listen to a radio. You just buy the Radio receiver and tune into the station of your choice. Similarly, you just buy a GPS receiver and it automatically captures the satellite signals.
